#26 BMP series: Storm Drain Inlet Control

The storm drain inlet must provide control for water run-off and the sediment it carries from the source. It can be easy to over-rely on a storm drain inlet. This means that adequate inspection and repair must take place when the inlet is compromised. This means that proper measures must be maintained for storm drain inlets. Such measures include the following.

– Detainment & Filtering of Storm Drain Run-Off

– Downstream Diversion if Desired

– Avoiding Flooding from Run-Off

In addition, heavy flows of water should not bypass or overrun the inlet due to inadequate construction. This means that the area must be inspected, and the proper size and shape of the storm drain inlet installed.

Issues

Issues may arise with the storm drain inlet if it is ignored or abandoned while still in use. A lack of proper maintenance which causes either a buildup of sediment or damage to the inlet itself. Plus, for constructions that take place over the winter months, the amount of ice buildup during this time must be controlled.

Before the first freeze, be sure that the soils in the site are stabilized and any off-side inlet controls are removed from public areas. This helps ensure that ponding and a buildup of ice are minimized.

Function

To maintain the proper function of a storm drain inlet, the proper erosion controls must be put into place. This means that it must be installed as close to the source as possible. Keep in mind that inlets are only effective at removing some of the coarser sediments during run-offs that are low flow in nature.

By filtering out such sediments, they can help reduce erosion. This means that the inlet must be adequate in size to avoid being bypassed or excessively filled with water during a run-off event.

Inspection

You should inspect all devices on a weekly basis. Plus, inspect after a rain or precipitation event. Look for any damage or issue with the inlet so that repairs can be carried out as quickly as practical. In addition, the inlets should be gauged for their effectiveness and improvements made when possible.

Aftermath

Once the storm drain inlet is no longer needed, it should be removed. This means that the area has stabilized and will not be subject to more construction or disruption of the land.
