#22 BMP Series: Construction Site Dewatering

A dewatering site is when impounded water is discharged from a parcel into a city storm sewer. Or when the water is discharged where it will eventually enter a city storm sewer will require obtaining a permit from the city.

Obtaining a Permit

If you want to avoid certain fines or legal actions when it comes to discharging water from your construction site, then you must obtain the proper permit before the dewatering begins. This means that you must maintain a certain level of water quality or quantity that is appropriate to put into the sewer system. If the water discharge from your site contains contaminants that are not suitable for the sewer system or the amount of water discharged well exceeds the limits of the system, then you will have to explore other options. You must follow the conditions as stated by the permit that includes but may not be limited to the following.

– Maintain Water Quality

– Regulate Water Quantity

– Exercise Erosion Control

You must have the proper source control measures in place for the dewatering to be performed. This means that the water which is discharged from the site will need to be monitored for possible contaminants such as concrete residues and the like.

Log: As part of the permit, you will need to maintain a proper log of the discharging process that takes turbidity readings, measures the pH of the water, and the like. This means that you need to keep updated information as per the requirements of the permit.

Pollutants: You will need to avoid discharging pollutants into a storm or sanitary sewer system that is part of the water that comes from your construction site. Such pollutants include but are not limited to the following.

– Concrete

– Hydrocarbons

– Sediment

You will also need to monitor receiving water by controlling it at the source and implementing the proper treatment controls.

Finally, the water discharge must be monitor on an hourly basis. Plus, if contaminants are suspected of being in the discharge, it must be stopped as quickly as possible. This means employing mitigation or contingency measures if an issue with the water quality is detected.
