Aggregate cover is a layer of gravel or crushed stone that is placed atop the erodible surface of the soil. The purpose is to reduce erosion to the soil or to remediate the loss of soil caused by exposed slopes that are subject to the seepage of groundwater or piping. The aggregate cover may be temporary or a permanent measure to control the exposed soil. They can be used as parking or staging areas and haul roads.
Implementation
– Fast stabilization can be achieved when aggregate is applied after initial grading of the site
– To protect sub-grade soils, place non-woven geotextiles
– Then place aggregate blanket and grade to desired thickness
– Ensure grades are thick enough to provide proper drainage to the area
– A 150 to 200 mm blanket of crushed granular aggregate should be applied to the site immediate after grading for use as roads or parking areas
– Granular blanket of 30
– 50 mm thickness needed for slopes with highly erosive soil
Aggregates must not contain the following.
– Mine waste, iron blast furnace slag, or blended nickel slag or clinkers
Such materials may contaminate the groundwater and thus cannot be used for aggregate purposes.
Inspection & Maintenance
Check all roadways and parking areas regularly to see if they require additional top-dressing. In addition, slopes should be checked as well on a regular basis. Plus, inspect all roadways, parking areas, and slopes after a significant precipitation event. Any damage that is discovered must be repaired promptly to avoid aggravating the situation.
